Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... Currently.

The creative mastermind did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

As the debut season of the hit series reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—the writers' room recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

About the Overwhelming Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get distracted by the rampant praise and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to ignore the noise.

“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”

“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Does the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?

So if Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.

“We have some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.

“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Alternatively, why not reference the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
