The Golden State is Completely Free of Drought for the First Time in a Quarter Century.

For the first time in 25 years, no portion of the state is experiencing water scarcity. This landmark event comes on the heels of difficult years marked by below-average rain that intensified blaze threats and challenged its huge agribusiness.

A Map Shows No Dryness

Thursday's report from the U.S. Drought Monitor confirmed that all of California is without any level of drought. This development was driven by a period of above-normal rainfall that replenished water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their typical levels.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” remarked a climate scientist.

Following Powerful Weather to Wet Holidays

Achieving this status involved powerful and fatal winter storms that battered the state in 2023, leading to extensive inundation, electrical failures, and deaths. While those storms helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Even into late December, areas like northeastern California were deemed abnormally dry. Heavy rains at the beginning of January washed away those remaining dry spots.

A Crucial Snowpack Presents a Challenge

But, experts warn that drought-free conditions is not the same as having no water worries. Recent measurements of the mountain snow accumulation show it at only about 70% of the typical level.

This mountain snow, which accounts for about a third of the state's usable water as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for long-term water security. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is premature to draw conclusions for the months ahead.

“The current pattern right now is more rain than snow,” commented a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to improve by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”

While the drought map is entirely green, attention turns to sustaining this positive water situation during the months to come.
