Preparations for Trump-Putin Talks Postponed Days Following Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed

Currently exist "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a White House official has announced.

Recently Trump indicated he and the Russian president would meet in Budapest in the coming fortnight to discuss the Ukraine conflict.

A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was planned for recently - but the administration clarified the two had had a "productive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".

The White House did not share further information on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit during a call with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts claimed his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with insiders suggesting Trump had urged him to relinquish significant territories of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

Yet, on Monday the American president supported a truce plan backed by Kyiv and EU officials to halt the hostilities on the present positions.

"Freeze the lines in its current state," he stated.

Moscow has frequently resisted against pausing the existing front lines.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Lavrov commented on Tuesday, suggesting that freezing the front line would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Negotiating Stances

The "underlying reasons" of the conflict demanded attention, Lavrov said, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of maximalist demands that involve the recognition of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president stated talks regarding the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the only topic that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

Putin's unscheduled call with Trump recently preceded speculation that the US was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could possibly hit Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The talk about the weapons systems had turned out to be a "strong investment" in diplomacy", he added.
