New Year's Partygoers Urged to Dress Warmly with Snow Expected Throughout the UK
Meteorologists are reporting a frosty start to the new year, with snowfall anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Plans Continue Despite Alerts
The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, unlike last year's postponement. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be needed," noted the national forecaster.
Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks displays, with no rain and open skies. Temperatures are due to be cold, making extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Widespread Advisories for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

- Delays and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.
Readings Forecast to Fall Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Medical Warnings Released
At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
