Martínez Double Keeps Inter in Pursuit of Frontrunners

Inter forward Lautaro Martínez netted a second-half brace to earn his side a 2-0 win at Pisa, ensuring the away side firmly engaged in the Italian league title race despite a somewhat shaky display.

Under manager Cristian Chivu, Inter currently are placed in third position in the table with 27 points, level with runner-up Roma and just one point behind leaders Milan. Meanwhile, Pisa hold the 18th position with 10 points.

Inter traveled in Tuscany looking to get back on track after enduring a derby defeat by Milan recently, followed by a Champions League loss at Atlético Madrid. However, they were forced to fight throughout by promoted Pisa. The home team created plenty of opportunities, but a clinical Inter scored the opener in the 69th minute when Argentinian Martínez drilled a one-time shot into the roof of the net. The attacker then tapped in from close range seven minutes from time.

Inter’s capacity to convert even with difficult circumstances proved decisive in earning three points.

In Spain, Real Sociedad staged a dramatic fightback from 2-0 down to equalize at home against Villarreal, only to succumb to a goal five minutes into added time. Villarreal’s scoring came from Ayoze Pérez shortly after the half-hour mark and Alberto Moleiro in the 57th minute, but Carlos Soler quickly pulled one back and Ander Barrenetxea leveled the score three minutes from time. However, Moleiro had the last word deep into added time.

Later on La Liga fixture, Real Madrid travel to Girona needing a win to go back to the top above Barcelona, who secured a 3-1 win over Alavés on Saturday.
