Israeli citizens commemorate two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza peace talks proceed
Citizens have gathered across the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.
The incident resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.
He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal commemorations until 16 October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired on Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' delegations convened in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the proposal.
A senior representative involved in the negotiations said that an late session of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the day's discussions ended without tangible results, because of conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He noted that the negotiations are "tough and have still not produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Critical Issues in Talks
- A permanent ceasefire
- The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies provision
- Post-war management of the territory
Civilian Reaction
In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, young a woman - whose sibling survived the assault on the gathering, where many attendees were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place appears as home now and until each abducted person come back none of us will feel safe."
"After we see everyone home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can commence heal," she added.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people assembled to show their backing for the families of the captives. Israel says forty-eight remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.
Protester a participant stated: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the abducted to return. But we really want assurances that we will be secure."
Surveys now consistently show that around 70% of Israeli citizens desire the war to end in return for the freedom of the captives.

"Once the dusk falls, the anxiety arrives with it," relocated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.
"We are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, notably my youngest child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Every second we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."
