Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028
Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has indicated that he plans to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections conclude.
"Absolutely, I would be lying if I said no," the governor stated when asked about contemplating a presidential run following the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."
Newsom's current term as governor concludes in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he cautioned that any determination is not imminent.
"It's up to destiny," he said.
Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary
Newsom has stepped forward as a notable adversary of the Trump administration, leveraging his social media accounts and advocating for a initiative that would expand the party's House seats in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This action has drawn criticism from adversaries.
Clash on Transportation
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a weekend interview on a major news network. Duffy disclosed a strategy to cut government money from the state and warned suspending the power to issue CDLs.
"I intend to cut $160 million from California," he stated, in the wake of a recently reported fatal crash in California involving an undocumented trucker that led to loss of life and injured individuals.
Newsom's office noted that the national authorities had renewed the driver's employment repeatedly, which enabled him to secure a trucking license under U.S. law.
Duffy had before indicated he was withholding $40m from the state for not enforcing language proficiency rules for truck drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office
"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, still doesn't understand national statutes," Newsom's office retorted in a previous statement responding to the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: California commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate much lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."
Polling Data and Future Prospects
A this month's study found that a majority of the party and almost half of voters indicated that the governor must consider running for the White House in 2028. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has increased to an mean of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has dropped from an mean of over 40% to under 40%.
In previous months, the governor remarked while visiting several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his future for 2028.
He mentioned his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.
"The idea that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, amazing," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who emerges in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the voters."
