Well, perhaps an Ashes series in Australia where they remain in contention to reclaim the urn after the first three Tests.

This is not the case during this tour, after Australia's crushing triumph in Adelaide gave Australia with a 3-0 lead for the fourth consecutive series on home turf.

The Barmy Army, the organized fan base, have a large group making the journey for the concluding fixtures in the SCG and MCG.

The Disappointed Travelers

The Ryding siblings are four such fans.

Alex, Sam, Rory and Katie had their travel arrangements and match passes arranged for the Boxing Day and New Year Tests "well ahead of time", anticipating a rare England series success.

Instead, they have watched Australia outplay the visitors in just 11 days from their house in the north of England.

"Everyone at work has been teasing me about it being over for the last two weeks," stated Sam Ryding.

"The hope was that we would have the series on the line upon our arrival."

Diminishing Hope

However, the situation is now facing the prospect of prolonging a streak without victory in the country to 19 matches when the Boxing Day Test begins in Melbourne this week.

The England team - and their fans - will be keen to prevent a clean sweep.

It was mentioned that the "excitement and fun" of head coach Brendon McCullum's 'Bazball' in recent years had "renewed interest in" the five-day game for England fans.

However, the group said they had low expectations for the final two games - and all they are asking for from the players is "some resilience".

"Commentators consistently alludes to it, but it all is about mental resilience. 'This style has been elevated to a term now that is just, like, unrealistic play," commented another sibling.

"During a long match, you should dig in. Wafting outside 'sixth stump' areas has not been part of the coaching manuals, and that is mainly the fault the batting lineup."

Looking Ahead

Prompted about he believed England will secure a victory in this Ashes series, came the reply: "It appears the hosts are a stronger side right now."

"There is going to have to be several individuals that makes a significant contribution and produces a match-winning display."

Regardless of the result, the fans are anticipating the trip.

"It will be a wonderful trip regardless," said Katie. "We must adopt that attitude."

"Naturally, it's a let-down we don't have more to play for, but we have invested a significant amount by now."

"We will make the most of celebrating the holidays overseas. It is also our first experience traveling over Christmas."

An educator, Katie is focused on enjoying the long-haul travel as part of her Christmas holidays.

"Should the cricket disappoint, I've got golf to rely on," she finished.
