Arne Slot Asserts He Feels Safe and Retains Liverpool's Support After PSV Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it was natural for concerns to be asked about his future following a further heavy defeat against the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their ninth loss in twelve matches, representing the club's worst streak since being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were taken apart by the Dutch league title holders on a difficult evening at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I'm fine, I have got a lot of backing from above,” the coach remarked.
“It would be nice to turn it around and earn three points obviously but when you're working as a coach and not doing well then it's typical that questions are asked.”
He added, “I'm comfortable with my position. This isn't the initial instance I've found myself in a difficult position but it is about time that we turned it around.”
Discussions with The Board
When asked to expand on his conversations with the club's leadership, the head coach said:
“We communicate frequently. They are helpful to the team and for me and we have those conversations but they don't phone me every single minute of the day to say they have faith in me.”
He mentioned, “During our regular discussions I perceive the confidence. But I haven’t spoken to them since this defeat so far so it remains to be seen.”
Familiar Failings and Squad Reaction
Slot expressed regret over familiar failings from his team in their European defeat, specifically poor finishing and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more direct in his assessment of the team's situation.
“I haven't got the solutions. Honestly, I don’t. I’m saying that to all,” the midfielder remarked.
“It's simply unacceptable. I don’t even need to wait to think about it. I’m past feeling anger inside. I’m at the point currently where I simply lack the phrases.”
He went on, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen Liverpool for years.”
“For many years, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a spell such as this with performances like these.”
He finished, “However we continue to wear the emblem on our shirts. And until it is taken away, we’re always going to compete.”
“We’re going to try to help the side back to where it needs to be, prove again what this club is about and why it's known as the greatest side in the planet.”
“But right now, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
